UNDERSTANDING THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF KHUMS

Bismillah Ar Rahman Ar Rahim

This course on Khums was actualised from our Never Forget Muharram programme. We started each lecture by taking 5–10 minutes to discuss a Sharia ruling. We polled the audience to see which Shariah rulings they wanted covered. Due to the high numbers that voted (see poll), Khums’ votes were the highest and chosen as the preferred jurisprudential ruling to be explained. As the topic is a lengthy and complicated one, it could not be covered in a short space of time during the ten nights; it would require several sessions/courses. So at the end of the Muharram programme, we promised to deliver a course on Khums.

With the blessings of Allah SWT, we have been able to execute the request. The course was delivered over 10–15 weeks with an opportunity to send questions directly to Sheikh Farrokh Sekaleshfar, who is the Sheikh that delivered this course. Questions@onefifth.net

Khums is an area of Islamic rulings and jurisprudence which has grown at a very fast rate as a result of the modern advancements and evolution of the subject matter of income. The way people live, earn and spend has changed drastically, and so, in proportion to such changes, one observes an extensive growth in the subject of Khums. What used to be explained in a few lines by earlier scholars is now explained in volumes!

Course Objectives

This course intends to cover the basic principles involved in this sensitive subject enabling the duty-bound to independently calculate their duty vis-à-vis the khums and to apply the principles in their daily lives with more ease. There will be an opportunity to pose one’s questions throughout the duration of the course.

The layout of the course will be based on Ayatullah Sistani’s treatise “Minhāj al-Ṣāliḥīn” and rulings of Ayatollah Khamenei albeit simplified and structured differently for reasons of simplicity to the common layperson.
